Mr P Nicholson, Headteacher

As Headteacher I have the privileged position of overall responsibilty for the strategic direction and development of the school. I am supported, most ably, by a large number of staff all working together providing the best possible education for all our pupils.

Mrs K. Marshall, Deputy Headteacher

I am proud to line manage our five Year Leaders, and to have oversight with this experienced team of pupil welfare, discipline, praise and rewards. Linked to that is my important responsibility as Child Protection Liaison Officer, my deputy in this work being Mrs Mellor, Assistant Headteacher. I am also Educational Visits Co-ordinator, working with Mrs Jackson, Business Manager, and her team on this area of school enrichment. I also play a significant part in staff welfare and personnel matters. I am closely involved with our Boarding House, Rotherly, and the work of our fantastic Parent Staff Association.

I enjoy leading our Honours' events and working with collegues and pupil on our Pupil Voice systems and opportunities for pupil leadership. I am SLT Link to the Humanities Faculty, and also represent the school with work such as the Winchester Inclusion Partnership and other multi-agency groups. I am experienced with SEN provision and law, and work with the SENco and SEN staff.

I welcome your thoughts and your comments pertaining to these areas, and any ways in which you would like to work with us, as well as, of course, your concerns as they arise.

Mrs F Dean, Assistant Headteacher - Academic Reports

Assessment, Recording and Reporting

It is my responsibility to set each pupil’s targets for progress and attainment during their time at The Westgate School. This role includes leadership of the reporting process to parents, analysis of the School’s results and overseeing the Personalised Learning Reviews which every pupil participates in. We are currently working on the launch of Sims Learning Gateway which is the next step for us in sharing information with parents and guardians on their son/daughter’s progress.

Teaching and Learning

My role is to lead the practice of teaching and learning in a number of ways including: teachers’ continuing professional development; Initial Teacher Training and the induction of Newly Qualified Teachers. Home learning is an integral part of this and I therefore have responsibility for our policy and practice in this area. Additionally, I oversee projects involving Pupil Learning Mentors who conduct project work with younger pupils.

Mr P Hurley, Assistant Headteacher - Timetable, Options and Exams

Curriculum development

I am the person you need to talk to about the different courses we run and your child's options. If you have specific issues about classes or subjects you should first talk with the relevant Year Leader.

Extended School provision

This includes clubs after school, Easter camp and revision and Summer Camp. I am always looking for volunteers to help run the different clubs, please contact me if you are willing to help in this.

Examinations

Both internal and external are organised by myself and Mrs Bennett. If you have a general query regarding an examination I am the person to contact. If it is specific to a tier of entry you need to talk with the relevant Subject Leader before coming to me.

Mrs J Mellor, Assistant Headteacher - KS4 Personalised Learning

I have several responsibilities, please contact me if you need some advice, please help on any of the following:

Personalised learning at KS4

I work with the Year Leaders and Mr. Hurley to ensure our pupils are taking the right qualifications, achieve the highest grades and can secure progression to post 16 education, training and employment. For some pupils an NVQ qualification in a place of work is an important part of their learning. I am responsible for their work and college placements.

Careers and work experience

With the library team I organise careers events, practice interview days and work experience to support our pupils.

Enrichment and Enterprise Week

Each year we abandon the timetable for 1 week and pupils have the opportunity to follow a wide range of activities that promote enterprise and enrichment skills. From the Ardeche to dinghy sailing, flavours of the world to 3-D animation, there are a range of different opportunities. Please talk to the organisers of each event for further information.

Charities

A team of pupils and myself work hard to promote charities across the school. We organise a range of different events over the year. Please contact me if you have any ideas for charity work or would like to become involved with us.
