Drama

It's electrifying - the school production of Grease in 2009 stunned audiences with its professionalism and energy

Drama encourages all pupils to feel confident and expressive, to empathise with others and to explore issues, ideas and feelings in a supportive environment.  Attainment is very high and the Department’s wide extra-curricular programme helps further develop pupils’ talent.  Lessons are designed to be varied, stimulating, challenging and fun.

Drama is a thriving and industrious area of The School.  It takes part in National and local competitions – e.g the Shakespeare Schools Festival - and in community projects like Winchester’s own ‘Hat Fair – Festival of Street Theatre’.

We have close links with our feeder primary schools have involved them in joint projects – e.g. the Science and Dance Project.  Feeder schools are also invited to see matinee / dress rehearsal performaces of our annual School Productions.

The Westgate School is in close walking distance from the Winchester Discovery Centre and The Theatre Royal Winchester.  We have used the Theatre Royal as a professional venue for our productions and we benefit from their professional support in training our young artists. The School works closely with theatre companies and arts organisations.
