In PSHE at the Westgate School we cover a variety of topics within the umbrella of PSHE, Personal, Social and Health Education

  • PSHE
  • Citizenship
  • Careers Education
  • Economic Well-being and Financial Capability
  • WRL - Work Related Learning
  • Study Skills
  • Enterprise (some aspects of enterprise education)

PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education)

This topic is what you would traditionally associate with PSHE and involves personal development, social skills, sex and relationships, drugs education, rights and responsibilities, bullying etc. The list is endless!

Citizenship

This topic is a statutory requirement in KS3 and KS4. It covers law, crime, human rights, politics, global politics and economics as well as encouraging pupils to become active citizens in their community. As a school we have recently been involved in the setting up of a new Winchester City Youth Council.

Careers Education

We hold a Careers Convention, Interview Day and College Forum to assist pupils with preparation for further education and the world of work. We assist pupils with options, further education choices, writing CVs, application forms and personal statements. We have also introduced a new Personal Portfolio for pupils to take with them when they leave.

Economic Well-being and Financial Capability

This topic is designed to help pupils become more financially literate. We cover saving and budgeting, debt, credit cards, financial jargon, the British economy and the cost of living.

The Work Experience module is now launched at the end of Yr9 so that pupils can find an “Own Placement” over the summer. We then help pupils fill in all the forms in PSHE in September. Work experience takes place over two weeks in the summer term of year 10.

Study Skills

In Yr7 and Yr9 we have introduced a “Learning Styles” module to teach pupils more about learning how to learn more effectively. They learn to identify the preferred learning styles and improve other styles.

We have incorporated some Enterprise activities to Yr8 PSHE and intend to do so with other year groups in the future. These teach financial capability as well as social skills and much more.
