Lower School Curriculum
Upon entry in year 7, pupils are taught in tutor groups for the first few weeks when they are put into a class which enables them to achieve to their full potential.
Pupils experience problem-solving, functional maths, tasks and investigations throughout the year. Pupils regularly practise mental mathematics skills and enjoy enrichment projects towards the end of the year.
Topics are taught in modules and pupils are assessed every three or four modules. Class changes can happen at anytime throughout a year but normally occur after pupils are formally examined at the end of each year.
Upper School Curriculum
Topics are taught in modules and are assessed at the end of every three or four modules. Most pupils currently follow the linear GCSE course and some pupils follow the modular GCSE course depending on which is a better match to their ability and aptitude.
The linear GCSE is assessed by two papers which pupils sit at the end of year 11. The modular GCSE course is assessed by three module examinations; Unit 1 consists of Statistics and Number , Units 2 and 3 consist of Number, Algebra and Geometry. Units 1 and 2 are taken during year 10 and there are opportunities to resit. Unit 3 is taken at the end of year 11.
There is no longer any requirement for coursework for any GCSE mathematics qualification; however pupils will have the opportunity to carry out extended investigations during the course.
