Latin
Latin is an exciting choice at GCSE. Learning Latin opens the way to a deeper understanding of languages. It will widen our English vocabulary and improve our grammar in all kinds of writing. It will help our learning of modern languages. Subjects across the curriculum – Maths, Science, Humanities, Technology and Arts use a vocabulary derived from Latin – subtract, percent, fraction, evaporate, illustrate, computer, agriculture, picture …
Western Civilisation has grown from political and social ideals formed in Classical times which are at the root of study in Politics and Law.
Latin is currently taught to GCSE in Years 10 and 11 by a specialist teacher using lively modern resources. Groups are small, tuition is tailored to students needs and enables fast progress. In Year 10 students focus on learning grammar to the level required to read the Latin set texts in Year 11. Roman life topics are taught alongside each stage of language. The final exam has 4 papers –language, verse literature, prose literature and Roman life topics.
Pupils have opportunities to visit local sites of archaeological interest, to read inscriptions and to join in schools events and competitions.
Pupils can choose to take latin as a second language from Year 8 and this two year Key Stage 3 Course uses modern resources to provide a firm foundation for GCSE Latin.
