The PE Department offer a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum for all students at The Westgate School. We aim to teach all students to:
- Develop their level of skill, knowledge and understanding in a range of physical activities.
- Lead an active and healthy lifestyle.
- Enhance their personal, social and moral development through physical activity.
- Work effectively in an enjoyable environment in which an awareness of safety and good practice is nurtured.
In order to achieve this we will:
- ensure students encounter and participate in a wide range of activities
- develop a wide range of activity specific skills
- enhance student's body control and creative movement
- provide a sound working knowledge of relevant regulations and safety procedures
- test and improve fitness through practical activity
- develop the student's ability to prepare for, and recover from, physical activity
- raise an awareness of the intrinsic need for
- communication
- co-operative teamwork
- respect
- understanding in competitive and problem solving situations
- use sporting situations to enhance self esteem
- promote sport/physical activity as a form of relaxation and enjoyment
- provide opportunities for continued participation through a comprehensive extra curricular programme
- provide information and guidance on local sports facilities, clubs and opportunities
- enable students to evaluate the effectiveness of their own and others work in order to set targets to improve
