Gifted, Able and Talented
At The Westgate School just over 19% of our pupils are identified as Gifted and Talented. The Government's target is just 5%. As a result, we have ample experience of working to extend the exceptionally able.
Our approach is through an enrichment programme that adds to the range and level of challenge. Our school curriculum is the best vehicle to deliver challenge and extension activities to every pupil in all year groups. However, there are some activities that cannot be delivered within the normal curriculum and these enrichment activities are designed and developed instead through the extended schools concept. Using time after school or weekends, we promote events such as Maths Challenge, enterprise tasks, geography field work, language exchange visits and debating sessions.
The fruits of our work can be shown by the GCSE grades - 45% (2010) and 37% (2009) of all GCSE results gained were A or A*. More importantly we believe that pupils leave The Westgate School eager to continue developing their minds and further advancing their education. The feedback we receive from the sixth-form colleges about our young people is extremely positive.
