Academic Monitoring

When we use this term we mean
- how we track individual pupil progress over a specified period,
- how their achievements measure up against the individual subject targets that have been set for each pupil and
- the strategies we use to get pupils back on track if required.
Target Setting
Subject teachers set individual targets for every child they teach. These aspirational targets are identified by taking into account past and current levels, test scores and classroom performance. Therefore, the targets teachers set are those that we think the pupil could achieve in each subject as long as:
- they attend school regularly (eg research shows that pupils with 90% attendance have only a 35% chance of 5 or more A* - C grades at GCSE. – we would expect attendance of 95% or above over an academic year for good progress to be made.)
- work to the best of their ability and be fully equipped at all times and
- show evidence of independent learning through extra effort and research; especially around subjects they find difficult.
When we report to parents through the Progress Report, the Pupil Profile or during Parents’ Evening we judge progress against those targets and comment on whether the pupil is on target or not.
As Year Leaders have an overview of the whole year group they use these three reporting times each year as the trigger for individual pupil scrutiny. Any pupil who is identified as not being on target in 3 or more subjects will usually be placed ‘On Report’ which is lesson by lesson scrutiny for a period of 2 weeks. The report period is followed by a pupil review involving the tutor, Year Leader and parent – in any combination and as appropriate to the individual pupil’s needs. In Year 11 a pupil may be given a mentor who will work with them on target setting.
