Transition

Moving from primary to The Westgate

We pride ourselves on having a comprehensive transition program to ensure that the move from Primary to Secondary school is managed in the most sensitive and thoughtful way possible. We recognise that this can be an anxious time for both pupils and parents and so our program aims to help allay fears and answer any questions either pupils or parents have.

It is incredibly important that lines of communication between parents, pupils and the school are clear, as these relationships are vital in terms of ensuring that we are creating a supportive, friendly environment in which both personal and academic achievement thrive.

The transition program comprises:

  1. The Year Leader visiting every primary school sending three or more pupils to our School. They talk to both pupils and staff.
  2. A series of open mornings for parents and pupils to visit the school while we are working using pupil guides from years 7 to 9. There are no special arrangements, just a chance to see our school in operation on a normal working day.
  3. Induction day - where pupils attend school for the day and try a series of taster lessons.
  4. An evening where parents and pupils are introduced to the team of tutors, the Year Leader and the Senior Leadership team of the school.
  5. Summer Camp-This occurs at the beginning of the summer holiday and provides a relaxed and informal introduction to the school, the grounds, and the sort of opportunities the pupils will have when they start full time. This has been incredibly successful and feedback from the pupils very positive. Last year two thirds of the year group attended.
  6. On the first day of school the new Year 7s attend on their own in order to give them a chance to settle in.
