The Westgate's Day Nursery
Welcome to Rotherly Nursery
In the Early Years Foundation Stage at the Westgate, we aim to develop and nurture the Characteristics of Effective Learning in all our children. These characteristics are: playing and exploring, active learning, creating and, thinking critically; together they enable children to become happy and effective learners. Our specialist Early Years Foundation Stage Leader oversees provision in both our Lower School and the Nursery ensuring continuity for all children who progress through this route as well as from other settings.
Westgate's Day Nursery is an all year round, registered day care setting for children between the ages of 3 months and 5 years. The nursery is situated in a modern, purpose-built facility that provides excellent indoor and outdoor learning environments in a secure and self-contained setting. The Nursery is led by experienced Nursery Managers and provides a warm and welcoming environment. High quality care and learning is organised in to age based rooms:
Rainbows - 3 months to 2 years
Caterpillars - 2 to 3 years
Butterflies - 3 to 5 years
In addition to excellent facilities in the nursery, children also have access to other facilities and activities on the Westgate site including cooking and physical education in the Primary Phase as well as access to the school’s purpose designed grounds and playing fields.
A unique aspect of our nursery is the strategic oversight from a highly experienced and qualified Early Years, Foundation Stage teacher and, our Head of Primary Phase. This means that colleagues in our nursery benefit excellent professional learning opportunities and there is smooth transition into Year R.

The Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum provision
Children are nurtured within a play based curriculum which is broad, planned and balanced using indoors and outdoors spaces with both adult led and child initiated learning. The play is enjoyable, devised to promote thinking and problem solving, improve language competence and encourages the exploration and investigation of materials.
Miss Collins is Westgate's Early Years Foundation Stage Leader and oversees Early Years provision in both our Primary Phase School and the Nursery ensuring continuity for all our pupils. Miss Collins is a very experienced Early Years teacher who is also a Lead Practitioner in the Early Years for Hampshire. Colleagues work together to develop teaching, learning and the environment and ensure the highest quality provision and the best possible start for Rotherly nursery pupils, in readiness for Year R - whether that be in our own Lower School at The Westgate, or other primary settings in the area.
We have a strong partnership with Westgate School's linked primary schools and whether your child will attend our primary phase, or another setting, we work closely to provide them with the strongest possible start in their learning for future success and happiness.

Our aims, vision and values...
A nurturing, safe and caring environment where the happiness and well-being of each child is paramount.
A high quality, fun play based curriculum which builds on children's needs and interests.
Fostering close partnerships through effective communication with families to ensure the best outcome for each child.
To learn and grow both indoors and outdoors within family groupings in an adaptable environment, to inspire a love of learning that facilities well rounded development.
We first opened our doors in September 1991. We shared our home, Rotherly House, with the boarders of The Westgate School. Rotherly House was originally built in the early 1900s. And we enjoyed the surroundings for 22 years. Rotherly Day Nursery started life with just 15 children a day. As time passed by the need for childcare grew and addition of Rotherly Cottage to the nursery environment, so did we!
We have seen many families grow with us and we are now seeing some of those children from days of the past bring their children to Rotherly to continue their journey with us too! Exciting times came with our purpose built nursery, to which we moved to in October 2013. Rotherly House has also been on its own journey and is now incorporated in Westgate Lower School. The nursery children are able to enjoy all of the facilities across Westgate’s All Through Site including Rotherly where we first began.
