YR 9 (KEY STAGE 4)
Year 9 Leader
My name is Julian Sambrook and I am the Year Leader for Year 9 this year. This will be my 16th year as a pastoral leader at The Westgate, and my 31st teaching in schools in Kent, Southampton and Hampshire.
My principal role will not change from previous years; simply it is to ensure, “Nobody gets left behind.” Firstly this involves ensuring thorough tracking of every pupil’s academic progress and seeing that appropriate intervention is in place so that no pupil or key groups of pupils are prevented from aiming for their potential. This involves working closely with Miss M Atkinson, Assistant Year Leader, my team of fantastic tutors, departmental heads, parents and of course the pupils too.
Secondly, I oversee the welfare of Year 9, monitoring and supporting the emotional health and well-being of every pupil. Our aim is to develop and nurture a group of happy, robust and independent learners. Again this is made possible with the input of tutors, subject staff, parents and a wide range of internal and external professionals. A key focus for this year shall be ensuring good progress is made in the first part of the pupils’ new courses, as well as making informed decisions about the Year 9/10 Options process.
Good partnership and communications remain key, so please do not hesitate to contact me at to raise any questions or issues regarding overall academic progress or pastoral care in Year 8. For everyday enquiries the initial point of reference remains the form tutor.
