The Importance of Careers Education

At The Westgate School, we believe that high‑quality careers education plays a vital role in preparing our pupils for their futures. As the world of work continues to change rapidly, it’s more important than ever for young people to understand the opportunities available to them and to develop the skills they will need to thrive. Careers education helps pupils build confidence, discover their interests, and make informed decisions about their next steps, whether that’s further study, apprenticeships, or entering employment.
Next week, we will be marking National Careers Week, by providing our pupils with dedicated time and resources to explore the wide range of pathways open to them beyond Year 11.
National Careers Week Assemblies
Throughout the week, each year group from Year 4 to Year 11 will attend a careers‑focused assembly designed to broaden their awareness of the many post‑16 options available. Guest speakers have been invited to talk to the pupils about their professions and they include an author, a barrister, and representatives from the BBC and B&Q. These sessions will help pupils think about their strengths, ambitions, and the diversity of routes into further and higher education.
We encourage all parents and carers to log on to our careers platform Unifrog, where you and your child can explore university courses, apprenticeships, vocational pathways and a wide range of career profiles.
Curriculum Choices Evening – Thursday 5th March
We will be holding our Curriculum Choices Evening for Year 8 and 9 families on Thursday 5th March, running from 4:30pm to 6:30pm in the Upper School Hall.
Although this event is primarily aimed at those preparing to make their GCSE subject choices, pupils and parents from other year groups are very welcome to attend.
Westgate Careers Fair – Thursday 5th March
Alongside the Curriculum Choices Evening, our annual Westgate Careers Fair will run from 5:30pm to 7:30pm in the Main Building. This event brings together local colleges, employers and professionals from a range of industries, offering pupils the opportunity to ask questions and gain insight into different career paths.
Food will be available in the Hub until 6:30pm. Please note: card payments or pupil biometric payments only.
Mr Howes and Mrs Fyvie-Rae will also be available throughout the evening to share resources and guidance for parents on understanding the impact of smartphones on mental health.
Get Involved
