Music clubs in the secondary phase

We’re delighted to offer a vibrant range of music clubs for all pupils, whether you already play an instrument or simply enjoy exploring music. Everyone is welcome!

Our weekly rehearsals and sessions provide a fun, supportive space to make music, listen to and appreciate different styles, and discover more about music theory, the how and why behind the music we love.

Many of our 15 ensembles also take part in performances within school such as at Parents’ Evenings, showcase concerts and school fairs; they play across the community including the annual carol service, and at Hampshire Music events throughout the year. Pupils taking part in extra-curricular music also have the opportunity to come on a range of trips including The Grange Festival Opera Project and masterclass sessions and workshops at Peter Symonds College and Barton Peveril College.  Military bands have visited to work with our pupils, along with professional musicians from all areas of the industry and pupils are taken to concerts and have been given the opportunity to have Q&A sessions with the professional musicians.   Students from world class conservatoires have visited and worked with our pupils.

The Westgate School is described as a ‘Flagship’ school for the Hampshire Music Service due to the uptake of specific instrumental tuition provided through the hub and the number of pupils that participate in Hampshire Music Service ensembles. Over 300 pupils have instrument lessons from 14 peripatetic teachers!  We have been nominated and subsequently awarded ‘Music Mark’ status in recognition of the school's commitment to music.

If you’d like to get involved, just come along to any rehearsal and we’ll add you to the register. You can even rotate between clubs if you have another commitment that occasionally clashes.
